RealLife Speaking Club– Questions & Answers

🌎 RealLife Speaking Club– Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know about speaking English with Global Citizens from around the world.

📖 The basics

What is the RealLife Speaking Club?

It's our community for speaking English– it’s a trusted space where English learners from all around the world meet every day and have real one-on-one conversations about fascinating topics.
Every day, the Club discusses a new conversation topic. You watch a short video about it, think about how you'd answer the questions (even practice with AI about the topic), and then talk with other Global Citizens who are exploring the same topic. It's the place where you don't just learn English — you live it.

Who will I speak with?

You'll speak with Global Citizens: English learners from all around the world who joined the Club for the same reason you did.
Everyone in the Club has made the same commitment to our community values:
🌱 Be curious
🤝 Be open
💛 Be respectful
🌟 Embrace mistakes—as part of the process.

That's what makes this space different from anywhere else you can practice English: before you say a single word, you already know that you have something interesting to talk about.

Is it free?

Yes. Joining the Club and having conversations is free.
Premium gives you a richer learning experience: longer conversations, higher-rated partners, unlimited practice with your AI Coach, including post-call feedback, a transcript and recording of your AI call. (More on that below.)

When does the Club meet?

Every single day. Each daily meeting is called a meetup, and it happens during peak hours (more on that below), when most of our app’s Global Citizens are online, so you'll have the highest chance of finding good people to talk to.
You can see today's meetup, and the upcoming ones, in the Speaking Club in your app. Times are shown in your local time.
Current Peak hours: This is a brand new feature, and we’re learning as we go, but based on our previous “Global Speak” we know that we have a strong convergence of people wanting to speak from 12-8 pm UTC.
About the times: Our goal and plan is to build a strong enough movement of Global Citizens that will allow us to expand these meetup times to the point where they’re always happening, and eventually multiple topics. The challenge is that we need a certain amount of high quality speakers online at the same time for these meetups to be successful.
We apologize if our meetup times don’t coincide with your availability, and if that’s the case, we hope we’ll be able to fix that soon.

🚀 How it works

How do the conversations work? Open today's meetup in the app and see the conversation topic.

🎬 1. Prepare: Watch the short video about the topic and read the conversation questions. Think about how you would answer them.
💭 2. Practice with our AI Coach (Optional): Use our AI Coach to practice your answers before joining a conversation. Free learners get a sample call, and Premium users get 10 per week.
🗣️ 3. Start a conversation: You'll be connected with one Global Citizen for a one-on-one conversation. Ask the conversation questions by default.
🌎 4. Keep speaking: When it ends, start another one with someone new — as many as you like.

Do I have to watch the topic video first?

Yes. Preparing is part of the Club, and it's required before you start a conversation.
There's a good reason for it. When both people have watched the same video and thought about the same questions, you’ll always have something interesting and even life-changing to talk about. It's what makes a Club conversation feel different from a random chat with a stranger.

How long are the conversations?

Conversations start at 4 minutes. If you're both enjoying it, you can extend by 4 more minutes– that's up to 8 minutes, free.
Premium members can extend a second time, by 8 more minutes– up to 16 minutes in total.

Do I need to use my camera?

You can choose between video and audio. We recommend trying video, because it helps you connect with the other Global Citizen — you can see their face, their smile, and where in the world they are.

What will we talk about?

Every meetup has one conversation topic, with a handful of suggested questions. You can see them before your conversation and during it, so you always have somewhere to go if you get stuck.

What if my English isn't good enough?

Connection matters more than perfection. The goal of the Club is to discuss interesting topics, not to judge each other's English.
You don't need to wait until you feel confident to join. Courage often precedes confidence. But if you feel you’re at a lower level and that communication would be difficult, it’s important to prepare and build “a script,” or to simply take notes and organize your ideas into a list before you join. Even the most fluent speakers need to do this!
If you're nervous, practice the conversation questions with your AI Coach first. It helps you arrive at your first real conversation having already found your words. And if you'd rather build up your English before speaking with people, our lessons will help you master the words you need for everyday conversations.

What if we don't understand each other?

It happens, and it's completely normal. Ask them to repeat, say it a different way, or slow down– every Global Citizen has been on both sides of that moment. Here’s an article on “survival phrases” that will really help. Making mistakes and working through them is the practice.

💬 After the conversation

Why do you ask me to rate my partner?

After each conversation, we ask you a few quick questions about how it went — including whether you'd speak with that person again (Aww yeah / Maybe / Not really).
Your answers do two things: they help us understand what makes a great conversation, and they help great partners earn a name in the Club. Answering honestly is one of the most valuable things you can do for this community– it's how we keep the Club a place worth coming back to.
Your answers are private. The other person never sees what you said.

If I say "Not really," will I be blocked from that person?

No. Rating a conversation isn't a punishment, and "Not really" doesn't block anyone. It's just information that helps us match people better.
Keep in mind that there’s no guarantee you’ll speak with the person again, but you just may. And just so you know, we are optimistic that we’ll have a feature to reconnect on the app soon!

🛡️ Trust and safety

What if someone behaves badly?

Report them. If you feel disrespected, you can end the call at any time, and after a call you can report a partner for a behavior problem– and block them, so you're never connected again.

Every Global Citizen has committed to the same commitment:
🤝 Be respectful
💛 Be kind and supportive
🚫 Don't flirt (this isn't a dating app)
🌎 Don't try to convert others to your religion, politics, or beliefs
If someone breaks that promise, we want to know.

What happens when I report someone?

We review all reports and our system is ready to take swift action to help prevent other learners from having a negative experience. Depending on what happened, they may be asked to go through the Global Citizen commitment flow again—or they may lose access to the Club.

How do you keep the Club safe?

Three ways:

  • Everyone commits. To enter the Club, every member makes the Global Citizen commitment and earns their Global Citizen stamp. Nobody speaks with anyone before agreeing to how we treat each other here.
  • The community watches over it. Your ratings and reports shape who you meet.
  • We act on it. Members who don't respect the commitment don't stay.

⭐ Premium

What do I get with Premium?

Premium Speaking Club Benefits

  • Higher-rated partners first. Your search starts with the partners other learners rate highest.
  • Longer conversations. Extend up to 16 minutes instead of 8.
  • Your AI Coach, for practicing the topic before you speak with real people, and for conversation practice any time. After each call you’ll also get a report with feedback, plus a transcript of the conversation. (Premium users get 10 x 5 min AI Coach Conversations per week).

These are just the Premium Speaking Club benefits. View a list of all Premium benefits here.

Will speaking with non-natives or lower-level partners hurt my English?
Understanding English and speaking it are two different skills. You already get excellent models of native English every day, in our lessons, in movies, in podcasts. What most learners are missing isn't more input– it's the hours of actually using their English with another human being. That's the skill the Club builds, and you build it by speaking, whoever you're speaking with.
A few more things also worth taking into account:
First, English today belongs to the world: most English conversations on the planet happen between two non-native speakers. Learning to understand many different accents is a real skill, not a compromise.
Second, as the philosopher Seneca once said, “we learn by teaching.” Speaking with someone at a lower level is one of the fastest ways to consolidate what you know– when you slow down, choose your words carefully, or help someone find theirs, you're using your English at its most active.
And if you want partners who are reliably at a higher level, Premium starts your search with the highest-rated partners available.

Are conversations with free members worse?

Every Global Citizen in the Club made the same commitment, and great conversations happen at every level. Premium simply starts your partner search with the highest-rated partners available– and if nobody is available, we widen the search so you're never left waiting.

Can I try the AI Coach for free?

Yes– every member gets at least one AI Coach conversation to try it out. And you can always try a 7 day free trial, which will give you 10 more calls, and see if Premium makes sense for you.

🪪 Your profile

What is the Global Passport?

It's your profile in the Club. When you make the Global Citizen commitment, you earn your Global Citizen stamp– that's what gets you into the Club.

What is a Global Citizen, exactly?

Someone who knows that to grow in English– and in life– you need to step outside your local limits.
A Global Citizen is curious (they know that the moment you think you know enough, you stop growing), humble (open to new ways of seeing the world), and sees every person, wherever they're from, as part of the same human family. They embrace mistakes as part of the process.
If that sounds like your kind of person: welcome. We built this for you.
